Happy New…Diet Resolution Week!

December 31, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

Diet Resolution Week

Dieting is the number one New Years Resolution that we hear about every year. A lot of people have the desire to stay fit and eat healthier for the New Year! The sad part is we also hear about people who did the distance for about the first two months and then the resolution dies.

January 1-7 is National Diet Resolution Week! It’s not about fasting or dropping massive pounds. This week is about the types of foods you choose to put on your plate & staying active.

Now people that know me personally will say I have never been on a diet and have no need for it so I should probably shut up! But the fact is that you don’t have to be a larger person to want & maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are so many categories of healthy that I am lacking in. In addition my son battles with childhood obesity and we walk this journey together everyday.

So in an effort to share what we have learned from the dieticians and nutritionist, and to embrace National Diet Resolution Week here are some steps that we have taken to change our eating habits.

Make A Tangible Goal

Nothing says disaster than an unrealistic goal. Goals should be measurable and rewarded in steps. In my case my baby needs to loose 12 pounds and reduce his Body Mass Index by his anniversary date. So we have one year to shed 12 pounds. You may think that’s easy but for someone who has a genetic disposition to be larger in size its not that easy. So every month when we visit the nutritionist we get a small token of “good job” like a sticker or maybe a small toy.  For an adult maybe a manicure or a movie would do the trick!

Planning & Practice Make Perfect

Planning makes life and goal keeping a lot easer when you can pinpoint exactly what you are supposed to be purchasing from the grocery store and planning meals. It allows you to avoid all impulse purchases and hold yourself accountable if you stray from the plan.  We use Menu Planner to keep us on track.

Change Your Plate Size

So with the forward movement of eating healthy and the changing from a food pyramid to plate the size of the plate should change too! When I was growing up we always had the four-piece table setting and used the small plate for salad and the large plate for dinner. Then our parents would tell us that we couldn’t get up unless we ate all of our food. In a Caribbean household that plate is a hefty size.

New Plate Size

I have since dropped the habits of my parents and we use small plates for everyone! We also practice waiting 20 minutes before getting up for seconds because that’s how long it takes the brain to recognize if you are full or not (FACT).  During this time you can have great conversation sitting around the dinner table sans the TV.

Pair Your Foods

If you feel for a sweet treat know that everything is okay in moderation. Pair that sweet sugar or carb with a protein to counter act the spike in blood sugar. This is helpful for those prone to diabetes. So in my home we cut candy and soda but we still have some cookies lingering around that we may smear with peanut butter for a tasty bite while keeping our body in balance.

Drink Water

We all know this but very few of us successfully drink 8 glasses of water a day. All I can say is just try your best! Water is great for flushing the body of impurities and keeping us hydrated.  I have tried flavored water but don’t enjoy it so much. I have found one product that I fell in love with but can’t find in local markets called MASH. I would drink this all day and night if I could.

Move That Body

Keep active! Even 30 minutes a day of something truly simple can improve your energy level, circulation, endurance, stamina, and overall health. My son has committed to playing Just Dance or Wii Fit for an hour a day to attain his weight loss goals. It’s a video game; it’s fun and keeps him moving.  I have a simple trick of doing leg lifts while I brush my teeth. While I cook I may do arm circles or knee bends. Its small and simple but keeps me in motion.

I hope this motivates you to get past National Diet Resolution Week and stay consistent with your goals!

Happy New Year!

My Body, My Choice, My Rights…Were Not My Own, But They Are Now!

July 23, 2012 by Laing 3 Comments

With all the talk about health care reform and women’s health issues in the media I wanted to share an experience with you. I normally don’t get very personal and well it’s about time that I should. So I am thrilled that The Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act. I had a conversation last night with some older friends of mine and the topic of women’s rights came up. They were recalling a time in the 1960′s when a woman could not get credit with out her husband. Even if that woman was the bread winner of the family and he wasn’t working there was no chance of a woman doing anything without her husband’s name. If you were a single woman you would have to get your father or brother to get the credit for you or be S.O.L. Need to buy a tire….call a man.

Then I recalled the time that I requested to tie my tubes after the birth of my son. The doctor told me flat out NO! I was in my early twenties unwed and only had two children. They refused to do it based on those facts. So I decided to get the mirena instead (5 year IUC). Upon the expiration of my mirena I again inquired about tying my tubes. The doctor said NO! (same doctor) but this time I was in my late twenties, had two children and needed my spouses consent. I remember my reaction as plain as day *jumping out of stirrups and sitting up* WHAT THE  &%@#(@&*!!!! Why on earth do I need my husband’s consent?

Do you think that’s selfish? I don’t think so! The last time I checked it was my body, I bear the child, and in most cases I take care of the child. So when I decide that my family is complete and I am satisfied with the beautiful babies I already have why do you want to bring up my husband?  Notice all of the I’s in my sentences. Needless to say she didn’t do it and I ended up with another mirena. So my expiration date rolls around and I am again on the same kick “I want my tubes tied”. This time I am in my early thirties with two kids and back to no husband. You might have been able to predict that the lack of husband was vastly approaching based on my reaction.

In doing my research I found a new method of permanent birth control. It’s called Essure. It’s a non-surgical procedure that is done in the doctors office with no anesthesia. They take inserts and place them into the fallopian tubes through the vagina and over a short period of time your body forms a natural barrier around them  (like scar tissue) to block sperm from reaching the eggs. No colderizing or threads to worry about, it’s as easy as chewing gum. Sorry I had to sneak that in somewhere… Regardless it seems to be a simple process that I am seriously considering. Any thoughts?

My Shade of Brown: I Stole My Sisters Smooch

April 13, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

So my sister Jen of Jael Custom Designs received a Pillow Box in the month of February from My Shade Of Brown. My Shade of Brown is a company that simplifies the tedious task of finding that “just right” beauty product. They cater to women of color and through partnerships with several companies conveniently place 4-5 sample sized products in a cute box delivered to your door monthly. After you try the products if one of them speaks to you, you can go to their website and purchase the regular sized item. Who doesn’t like to try before you buy?

I do not recommend or condone what I am about to say but…. I stole it (for approximately 5 minutes I was a thief)! I looked at all the goodies in that Pillow Box and fell in love with Big Girl Cosmetics Lip Shine Smooch No.55. I couldn’t help it, it spoke to me. It kept saying “take me home, she doesn’t wear lip stain like you do, I would look so pretty on you, take me home, she won’t mind, you’re family”.

Well she noticed me lingering around her Pillow Box and realized that my lip gloss was poppin’ and hers was missing. So I came clean and begged and begged to keep it. PLEeeeeeASE let me have this color it just compliments me so well…..Yeah I can’t do any criminal act I would sing like a canary. Eventually she gave in but not without a hefty negotiation that only sisters can understand. So in exchanged for two unnamed items I got my Smooch. Then it dawned on me after all that foolishness I could just go to the website and get my own. Oh well we were over due for a sister challenge anyway.

The most exciting thing about this was researching Big Girl Cosmetics. Big Girl Cosmetics Creative Director Kiley Russell established her company through a most profound circumstance.  Everyone remembers the airing of Oprah when she gifted her entire audience a Pontiac G6. Well Russell was a member of that audience. A new vehicle was not essential for Russel so in what I consider to be great business sense she sold the Pontiac G6 and used the proceeds to accomplish her passion.

Now I have had the dream where Oprah just decides to randomly pay off all my bills and give me a little extra to build a home but Russell’s dream was a little more focused. *smiles*

Bare Minerals Active Cell Renewal Night Serum Challenge

February 20, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

So I gave this post a month to develop. I decided if I am truly going to write about skin care I have to be disciplined enough to put the product to the test.  In addition to the challenge I recently switched my makeup line from MAC to Bare Escentuals. I think its a coming of age thing where I don’t feel the need to be bold ALL the time. Bare Escentuals gives me a covered but natural fresh look. Not too heavy, just right! Should I need my dramatic look for the red carpet I can always concede to my big ol’ makeup kit.

Okay so back to the challenge…I wash my face with bareMinerals Purifying Facial Cleanser after that I add the Active Cell Renewal Night Serum then follow with Purely Nourishing Moisturizer. I immediately saw a difference just by adding this product to my face. It felt extra soft and firm at the same time but not that tight feeling you get from harsh treatments, this was very gentle and practically odorless.

So this is what bare Escentuals has to say “Our intensive night serum helps restore your skin’s ability to reach its ideal renewal state. Powered by our proprietary ActiveSoil Complex–combined with a unique moisture boost technology–this formula maximizes cellular renewal and hydrates skin overnight. The result? Cells that are supercharged to protect you during the day and skin that looks firmer, healthier and younger” well I co-sign! My face looks and feels great!

So now let’s talk price bareMinerals Active Cell Renewal Night Serum is $50.00 ”Suffering Sappho!”…..I have to admit sometimes the price of beauty can be expensive.  I justified it by saying on average a gym membership costs approximately $50.00 a month so I consider this a gym membership for my face, and knowing me (using only a dime sized amount) I will make this bottle last way longer than a month. So ladies its worth it! The Bare Minerals website also has an offer of free shipping on auto renewal orders to lessen the blow.

“But even though she was attractive, there was something else about her that caught his eye. She was intelligent, he could sense that right away, and confident, too, as if she were able to move through life on her own terms. To him, these were the things that really mattered. Without them, beauty was nothing.”
