My Baby Graduated From Puppy Pre-School!!!

May 16, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

I am on a mission to rid the world of the APBT stigma. My baby Pan (Meaning the Greek God of Wild Nature) is the most playful energetic puppy in town. He is an APBT Mix. From the moment I held him in my palm I knew he would be true to his name, he is always bursting with energy. You can hear Pan coming from a mile away not because he is big and ferocious but because he can’t wait to meet you and wants you to know that he has arrived! If you have read my post My Dog Has Sever Allergies you will see that Pan lives in a bubble so when he gets out to explore the world there is no holding him back. In an effort to calm Pan down I signed him up for Beginner Education at PetSmart.

At PetSmart I was paired with the most AWESOME-est PetSmart trainer ever Angela Curry {that’s my famous shameless plug} who turned Pan into a gentleman in six weeks! At PetSmart the training is mostly for the owner rather than the dog because if we don’t consistently practice what we learn your furry best friend will just revert to his natural instinctive ways.  Not to mention that I learned a dog’s short term memory is only 20-30 seconds long so repetition is key. Outside of good manners and great tricks the PetSmart classes also highlight so many other areas of care like;

  •  What toys are best for your breed
  • What are the best (and most cost effective) treats for your dog
  • Diet
  • Grooming
  • Danger Zones- poisonous plants and foods for dogs
  • Socializing
  • House Training (Potty Training)

Another thing that I absolutely loved was that after Angela found out about Pan’s food and environmental allergies she truly went above and beyond to include key points and suggestions that pertained to our allergy sheltered lifestyle. She was also my food allergy advocate, she traded out her treats in the sessions to make sure Pan didn’t get into anything he wasn’t supposed to. Frequently telling on lookers “don’t feed the dog he’s allergic to the world”.  I appreciated the second set of eyes. Oh and don’t let me forget KOTA *throws hands up in the air* we love us some KOTA! I was so glad Pan had a playmate, Angela’s (APB Mix I think?).  Pan doesn’t get out much to socialize with other dogs and when he does he’s so worked up that pet owners give me the side eye like *you’re not gonna let him come near my dog* so we appreciate that DAKOTA wanted to play and can handle Pan’s energy. When Pan sees or smells KOTA he gets so excited (undertone not intended)! And I’m a happy Mama when my baby’s happy!

PetSmart Training was one of the best decisions that I made for Pan as well as my family. He is a lot calmer now and he has good manners. I am pleased with his progress and I am going to continue with his training. It is my goal to have Pan become Canine Good Citizen Certified and I am using PetSmart to reach that goal!

P.S. I paid for this class which is $109 out of my own pocket and with a $20 off coupon, this was not a sponsored post only my honest experience with PetSmat. However… should PetSmart want to sponsor our journey to become CGC Certified please please please feel free to contact me! {another shameless plug}

My Perrito Has Severe Allergies: What Brands Can You Trust?

April 12, 2012 by Laing 1 Comment

My perrito Pan is an ABPT mix and since he was about 3 months old I have been dealing with food allergies. He was a healthy 3 month old and then suddenly he began shedding like crazy and developing huge rashes on his stomach, legs, and paws. He would scratch his ears and throat until he drew blood. Pan is now 8 months old and we have been on various diets to rule out certain foods. It’s a very expensive and tedious process. You would think like humans I should just be able to get an allergy panel done to pinpoint exactly what the cause is and stay far away from those items. No such luck, with dogs its all trial and error.

As a younger puppy he was on the McDonald’s of dog food Ol’Roy. That was short lived. We have tried Nutro Natural Choice Grain Free, Nutro Lamb Meal & Rice, & Eukanuba Naturally Wild: New Zealand Venison & Potato Formula. I was upset to see that the Eukanuba Naturally Wild formula boasting 100% venison had chicken in it. That’s where reading the small print and knowledge of advertising comes in handy. The first ingredient is 100% real venison. Word games. I discovered the hard way that anything with chicken in it will send me running to the vet. I have removed grain to see the effects, then put it back and removed lamb, the lamb is still questionable. Duck is out. Turkey is questionable & bacon is in. Fish is the only staple in his diet right now.  For treats we use Dently’s Prime Cuts.

In addition to changing Pan’s food he is also on Purina FortiFlora (supplement containing probiotics) and GNC Pets Ultra Mega Multivitamin & GNC Ultra Mega Skin and Coat Essentials. These have made a huge difference with Pan’s tummy issues. He is less gassy, it reduced vomiting and his coat is slowly improving, areas where hair was thinning are coming back in and really shiny too!

We have now moved onto Wellness Complete Health Mix: Whitefish & Sweet Potato Recipe. I have used their Wellness Wellbites Lamb & Salmon Recipe before but didn’t know they made dog food [The treat section is in a completely different area than the dog food at my local PetSmart. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it].  So let’s see in the next six weeks how Pan improves.

In addition to food allergies Pan has seasonal allergies. So while I am sneezing, coughing, and suffering from swollen itchy eyes…so is my perrito.  Who would have guessed that fate would place an allergy ridden dog with an allergy ridden family? We are all, yes all on Zyrtec. Pan’s vet prescribed 20mg per day for him. By now I am sure you can tell that Pan is an inside dog, if we go outside I am watching him like a hawk to ensure he doesn’t put anything in his mouth. Even his skin touching something can incite a rash or hives. Whenever we go for walks its on concrete and he gets wiped down immediately when we get in the house or car.

I hate that he lives in a bubble, he is so restricted. Normal dogs go out and socialize, run and play. I am hoping that I can get his food allergies under control and develop a good regimen to make him more comfortable.
