My Delta Flight to Blogalicious was AWESOME!

September 28, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

It’s been a while since I flew and from my experience I will never go back to the old way of traveling. Delta made this the most comfortable simplest effortless flight I have ever taken. First I downloaded the delta app for iPhone to view my itinerary. The app allowed me to sync my itinerary to iCal. It sent me a reminder to check in the night before, even if I had baggage (which I didn’t). I still can’t  escape that $25 bag fee….but that’s another rant.

Upon arrival to the airport I was able to go straight to the gate with my virtual boarding pass. The boarding pass was an #AWESOME QR codethat had all my credentials in it. They even had a separate line for people scanning-in electronically. *BOOM!* How’s that for service!

On flight Delta provides free wi-fi for enabled devices. Let me say it one more time it’s FREE sans the $10 fee FREE! I officially love Delta!

So food is no longer included in any domestic airline flight the industry buried that idea long ago, but we all remember back in them days! They did provide complimentary snacks, salty peanuts and pop! I do enjoy that you can order an alcoholic beverage of your choice for a nominal fee! I didn’t partake of the spirits but the option is always appreciated.

All in all, if I can continue to get good prices for Delta flights this is the way to fly, tech savvy!

My Girls Made Their Own Bikes At The ReCYCLEry

September 26, 2012 by Laing 2 Comments

I was introduced to the ReCYCLEry NC by one of my best divas Dionne aka @LoisLaneNC. She is a bike enthusiast and marathon trained cyclist. The mere invitation to go on a bike ride with her is intimidating. My bike rides maybe 10 minutes of straight lines up and down the sidewalk, @LoisLaneNC rides like she’s on a mission to rack up miles and minutes up hills, down hills, nature trails, you name it she can do it!

One day we got into a conversation about my daughter’s bike being stolen and I how never replaced it. She clutched her pearls at the thought of a child without a bike and introduced me and my girls (daughter & niece) to the ReCYCLEry. There I met one of the founders of the ReCYCLEry NC, Rich Giorgi who walked the girls step by step on how to make & care for a bike, BIKING:101.

The girls were able to choose their bike frames from an assortment of donated bikes some in need of a little TLC others in dire need of full make over. They were fitted based on height and potential development. I know that sounds a bit much for just getting a bike but there is a true science to choosing a bike beyond the realm of the avid rider.

Rich is such an inspiration to these girls. He had them select a good frame, choose parts based on their body type and taught them how to replace the inner tubing of the bike tires. They were fixing chain links and replacing all kinds of nuts and bolts. I was truly impressed.

What an awesome opportunity to make your own bike and learn all the dynamics of what goes into making a bike, how to fix it and just the enjoyment of accomplishing something on your own. My daughter now rides her bike everyday after school and when my niece comes over they ride together all around the community. I have to dedicate some time to go in and show my appreciation for such a wonderful gift. As for the girls, next up…hitting the trails!

The ReCYCLEry is a non-profit organization that teaches bicycle repair and maintenance using a learn and earn approach, the ReCYCLEry accepts monetary donations as well as bike donations please click here for additional information. Remember RIDE YOUR BIKE!

Here We Go Again: Chick-Fil-A PSA

August 3, 2012 by Laing 1 Comment

So after serious personal debate I decided to get on my soap box about this entire Chick-Fil-A debacle. Everyone and anyone is entitled to their own opinion. Why all of a sudden is Chick-Fil-A the target of an anti gay marriage movement when let’s face it this company has made it’s vision and business practices blatant years ago. Through campaign contributions, sponsorships, the lack of an open location on Sundays…we all knew their values, without them even putting it into the atmosphere. It is a well know fact that the Chick-Fil-A’s business model is biblically based. If you don’t care for the opinion of the leadership of Chick-Fil-A then please don’t patronize their establishment. But enough with the rally’s and brand slamming. This has given Chick-Fil-A more exposure, free advertising, and supporters than they could have imagined…and the chicken is still the best.

Chick-Fil-A put out the following statement and I could’t agree more:

Jul. 31, 2012 Chick-fil-A Response to Recent Controversy

Chick-fil-A is a family-owned and family-led company serving the communities in which it operates. From the day Truett Cathy started the company, he began applying biblically-based principles to managing his business. The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect –regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 Restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators. Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena. Our mission is simple: to serve great food, provide genuine hospitality and have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.

Chick-Fil-A hasn’t denied any homosexual service. All the staff members that I have ever come into contact with are as sweet as the last drop of honey. They provide quality customer service. I have even had the opportunity to attend a branch of Chick-Fil-A’s charity foundation Winshape Camp through The Winshape Foundation at with my children at King’s Park International Church. It was a great experience! (but that’s a blog post for another day)

Now it’s not my right to judge how anyone lives their life. I have homosexual friends and family. I love them but I feel that I can support them without jumping on the gay agenda bandwagon because frankly my lunch choice shouldn’t interfere with your life and your life should not interfere with my lunch. We obviously won’t eat there together if you feel strongly about it but I am entitled to my opinion (having an opinion is not judging: judging is judging) and I enjoy Chick-Fil-A and yes the chicken sandwich is that good!

Additional opinion: Mayors trying to gain constituents and endorsements for their political campaigns should focus on larger issues like crime reduction and health care not banning fast food chains from their cities. Food for thought.

Oh and if I have offended you with my opinion and you decide to send an angry mob to get me you can find me at my local Chick-Fil-A sipping on a lemonade and devouring waffle fries n’ nuggets. *cheers*

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Can Big BRANDS survive scandal?

July 18, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

With the recent headlines of the “World’s local bank” contributing to incidences of drug trafficking and money laundering by having low risk ratings and policies for countries with known AML issues Bloomberg How do you think HSBC will weather the storm? In addition would the banks dealings in another country affect your banking relationship with them in the US?

Clear Internet Service Is Not Too Clear On Customer Service

April 12, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

I have had Clear internet service since November 2010. At that point in time they didn’t offer month to month plans. I leased my equipment with a 2 year contract. I have a Clear home modem and Clear Spot mobile device. I never really had trouble with the service, every once in a while I would get a slow connection and have to reset the device which always worked after unplugging it for a few minutes.

Then I moved from New York to North Carolina. You would think that with towers everywhere I would be fine, after all one of my devices is a mobile hot spot. To a degree that should have been a correct assumption. My downfall with Clear came when I called to change my address in their system. All of a sudden I have no internet. Ok bill is paid, plug is in properly, set and reset…..nothing.

My last resort with most companies is the dreaded customer service call. I have several associates who work in call centers that tell me horror stories of how some employees just don’t take their position seriously and use tactics to avoid dealing with clients. The famous disconnecting the call so it goes to another representative or placing you on hold for long periods of time to avoid hanging up and taking a new call. Also I do not support any company’s use of offshore call centers but I digress.

So in calling Clear I explained my situation to a representative who then took me through the trouble shooting steps (which I already did about 20 times) I unplugged, plugged, cleared cache, cleared history, blah blah blah…It’s still not working. The representative stated that since I just updated my address I should call back in 48 hours to let the change take effect. Really?

48 hours later I call back still complaining of no internet connection. I go through the same drama with a new representative who suggests that I try the modem on another device. Ummmm lady I only have one computer, then she tried to tell me it’s because I have a Mac. Did she just insult the Apple deities? It can’t be my computer because it’s happening on both Clear devices. Let’s just stop throwing stones in the dark okay! Now I’m boiling but she caught me in a situation, I was getting ready to leave the house for an event. Good for her bad for me. She suggested that I return my equipment for a new modem and clear spot device, so I should call back when I have more time to get this suggestion processed. I was happy with that solution.

I call back the next day and guess what not only did I have to go through the same BS again with trouble shooting protocol but I am not eligible to turn in my equipment. Why not? I’m in a lease, I pay extra for this protection every month. Oh no we have to do more trouble shooting before it can even be considered. I got so frustrated I asked for a supervisor…..and the phone disconnected……we knew that was gonna happen eventually right!

I took my frustration to twitter on my iPhone and in every tweet @clear was subjected to my rant. I had several of my followers deep in a dialogue about how poor clear customer service is. I even had some random tweeple direct message me to chime in on the conversation from profiles that I don’t follow. Well @clear has a great social media presence and immediately came to my aid to quell the situation. Through a series of tweets turned direct messages I was able to exchange my equipment. So after almost two weeks of not being plugged in, I was back in my virtual world.

I give accolades to the representative that ultimately assisted me on twitter. It was redemptive to say the least. So you think my story is done, nope! Clear took that act of redemption away when I received two e-mails later that week stating that my device does not satisfy the requirements for a warranty exchange by reason of: device outside of warranty period.

All I have to say is if I see any additional charges on my bill regarding the replacement equipment that was sent to me….all social media outlets be prepared for my campaign against Clear.
