My Delta Flight to Blogalicious was AWESOME!

September 28, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

It’s been a while since I flew and from my experience I will never go back to the old way of traveling. Delta made this the most comfortable simplest effortless flight I have ever taken. First I downloaded the delta app for iPhone to view my itinerary. The app allowed me to sync my itinerary to iCal. It sent me a reminder to check in the night before, even if I had baggage (which I didn’t). I still can’t  escape that $25 bag fee….but that’s another rant.

Upon arrival to the airport I was able to go straight to the gate with my virtual boarding pass. The boarding pass was an #AWESOME QR codethat had all my credentials in it. They even had a separate line for people scanning-in electronically. *BOOM!* How’s that for service!

On flight Delta provides free wi-fi for enabled devices. Let me say it one more time it’s FREE sans the $10 fee FREE! I officially love Delta!

So food is no longer included in any domestic airline flight the industry buried that idea long ago, but we all remember back in them days! They did provide complimentary snacks, salty peanuts and pop! I do enjoy that you can order an alcoholic beverage of your choice for a nominal fee! I didn’t partake of the spirits but the option is always appreciated.

All in all, if I can continue to get good prices for Delta flights this is the way to fly, tech savvy!

2012 Ford Focus Electric

May 25, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

In an effort to reduce my carbon footprint [I drive a 2001 Lincoln Navigator] I have been researching vehicles for my impending purchase. In doing so I had the pleasure of coming across the 2012 Ford Focus Electric at an event held at the first LEED Certified McDonald’s in North Carolina (Cary, NC). I am not going to sit here and tell you about high-voltage, lithium-ion battery systems because let’s face it I have very little knowledge in that area and it would be completely artificial. What I can do and I do it well, is tell you what appealed to me about this car. However…please don’t think that I am trying to dilute my stalwart yet feminine reputation by sticking to aesthetics.

Lets work our way from the interior of the 2012 Ford Focus outwards, shall we?

This gas free battery powered car has every gadget a gadget girl could dream of!

  • 4.2 inch LCD instrument cluster screen which shows the importance stuff like battery charge status & distance to the next charging station.

Yup I don’t like sticky situations like my car dying on me, I don’t do embarrassment very well!

  • Voice touch control over your phone, music, navigation system and climate controls.

I can hear myself now “Siri can you….oh I’m sorry I mean Ford honey can you change my temperature to 62 degrees”

  • Blue Butterflies, blue butterflies that’s all I have to say!

A plus for anyone who has an affection for the color blue and butterflies. In my case it would have been green and ladybugs but I am very sure that wouldn’t go over well with the majority of consumers.

“The MyFord Touch® emotive instrument cluster provides a unique visual of blue butterflies on the right cluster screen, which represent the surplus range beyond the point of the next charging station. The more butterflies on the screen, the greater the surplus. In selecting this visual, Ford designers were inspired by the concept of the “butterfly effect,” in which a small change can have an enormous impact.” – Ford

  • Seats 5 comfortably.

Son ✔ daughter ✔ dog ✔ okay I’m good!

  • Music is a must, the 2012 Ford Focus Electric comes with a Sony audio system nine speakers and an HD radio. The BONUS is it has iTunes tagging!

I am a true Apple head so that one detail could make my sale.

  • The My Ford Mobile application lets you know your vehicle location, nearest charging stations and you can even schedule charging and set reminders to avoid embarrassment *see bullet point no.1* It also regulates the temperature, gives you the option to schedule heating and cooling the car in advance of your travel time, provides economical routes, and calculates savings based on the CO2 emissions and your personal driving style.

“They have an app for that”…I have an app for everything. Yay Ford, you get extra cool points ! In addition to app greatness the savings calculation is good for anyone like me who looks at unit pricing in the grocery store before making a decision on which paper towel to buy. While I can’t do the math for CO2 emissions, I would have an app that does!

  • SYNC technology powered by Microsoft keeps you connected to your music, phone,  and navigation. Ford has also partnered with MapQuest to provide custom and economical routes.

Apple has yet to corner the market with an automotive partnership soooooo SYNC gets my green!

  • Push button technology!

I love that fact that this feature is no longer a luxury car item, it has me jumping with joy *jump with me*. The playing field is now equal. Scenario: I walk up to my Ford Focus Electric, you walk up to your Infinity, we both hop in sans the “boop boop” of the alarm, the difference being I just helped save the earth and you didn’t *I give them the eco-green stare and drive off* such a satisfying feeling.

  • Eco Conscious Interior; the cloth seats are made of REPREVE fiber (100% recycled material) . The cushions are made of bio based foam drawn from plant seed oil.

Again all other drivers get the *eco-green stare*!

  • Great trunk and compartment space, the rear seats even fold down for additional storage if necessary.

Now we venture to the outside of the car. I promise I’m almost done!

  • This car is so sporty.

Who knew going green looked so good…but seriously when I see a SmartCar I wonder WTH? But the 2012 Ford Focus Electric is sleek and stylish.

So what’s this gonna cost me? Not including the additional $1500 Ford portable charging station produced by Leviton.

Bonus to quell the sticker price shock: Never pull up to the pump, never require an oil change *fist pump* yessss! and get a federal tax credit up to $7500.

Next I am thinking of the doing the Ford Swap Your Ride Event to truly get a feel for the car…but that’s another blog post so stay tuned!

Clear Internet Service Is Not Too Clear On Customer Service

April 12, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

I have had Clear internet service since November 2010. At that point in time they didn’t offer month to month plans. I leased my equipment with a 2 year contract. I have a Clear home modem and Clear Spot mobile device. I never really had trouble with the service, every once in a while I would get a slow connection and have to reset the device which always worked after unplugging it for a few minutes.

Then I moved from New York to North Carolina. You would think that with towers everywhere I would be fine, after all one of my devices is a mobile hot spot. To a degree that should have been a correct assumption. My downfall with Clear came when I called to change my address in their system. All of a sudden I have no internet. Ok bill is paid, plug is in properly, set and reset…..nothing.

My last resort with most companies is the dreaded customer service call. I have several associates who work in call centers that tell me horror stories of how some employees just don’t take their position seriously and use tactics to avoid dealing with clients. The famous disconnecting the call so it goes to another representative or placing you on hold for long periods of time to avoid hanging up and taking a new call. Also I do not support any company’s use of offshore call centers but I digress.

So in calling Clear I explained my situation to a representative who then took me through the trouble shooting steps (which I already did about 20 times) I unplugged, plugged, cleared cache, cleared history, blah blah blah…It’s still not working. The representative stated that since I just updated my address I should call back in 48 hours to let the change take effect. Really?

48 hours later I call back still complaining of no internet connection. I go through the same drama with a new representative who suggests that I try the modem on another device. Ummmm lady I only have one computer, then she tried to tell me it’s because I have a Mac. Did she just insult the Apple deities? It can’t be my computer because it’s happening on both Clear devices. Let’s just stop throwing stones in the dark okay! Now I’m boiling but she caught me in a situation, I was getting ready to leave the house for an event. Good for her bad for me. She suggested that I return my equipment for a new modem and clear spot device, so I should call back when I have more time to get this suggestion processed. I was happy with that solution.

I call back the next day and guess what not only did I have to go through the same BS again with trouble shooting protocol but I am not eligible to turn in my equipment. Why not? I’m in a lease, I pay extra for this protection every month. Oh no we have to do more trouble shooting before it can even be considered. I got so frustrated I asked for a supervisor…..and the phone disconnected……we knew that was gonna happen eventually right!

I took my frustration to twitter on my iPhone and in every tweet @clear was subjected to my rant. I had several of my followers deep in a dialogue about how poor clear customer service is. I even had some random tweeple direct message me to chime in on the conversation from profiles that I don’t follow. Well @clear has a great social media presence and immediately came to my aid to quell the situation. Through a series of tweets turned direct messages I was able to exchange my equipment. So after almost two weeks of not being plugged in, I was back in my virtual world.

I give accolades to the representative that ultimately assisted me on twitter. It was redemptive to say the least. So you think my story is done, nope! Clear took that act of redemption away when I received two e-mails later that week stating that my device does not satisfy the requirements for a warranty exchange by reason of: device outside of warranty period.

All I have to say is if I see any additional charges on my bill regarding the replacement equipment that was sent to me….all social media outlets be prepared for my campaign against Clear.

A Day In The Life of My iPhone4

April 9, 2012 by Laing Leave a Comment

I consider myself the keeper of good apps. Due to my compulsive nature I buy apps like crazy in a quest for the best…to make my time and tasks more manageable. I am in love with organization.  If I had it my way everything in my life would be organized structured and controlled by routines…I know that is not realistic.  At this point in time I have 566 apps (iPhone, iPod, iPad) of which 216 are in use. I won’t give you a list of 216 apps but I will touch on my most used, because I actually use every last one of them (except the games they’re to entertain the kids). They are organized by importance & convenience, the first and second screens are used on a minute, hour, and daily basis.

As soon as my alarm wakes me up I go straight to my e-mails. Then review my calendar to see whats on schedule for the day. Depending on my schedule I go into Omni Focus where tasks are usually broken down into steps. Omni Focus does just that, it keeps me focused so I can complete a project instead of being distracted by the millions of things that surround me. If you count how many times you get interrupted or distracted while trying to finish a project then equate a value to your time you have just lost some serious money.  BillMinder lets me know who’s digging in my purse for the upcoming week. While PocketMoney keeps me on track. It is a personal pet peeve of mine when people don’t keep check book registers. After being in the finance industry for over a decade I know that a register can be your best friend. In today’s day and age where people just swipe cards and don’t keep receipts it’s important to record your spending habits. Know where your money goes and where your balance is.  It’s also a great tool to teach your kids about budgets and spending.

Then comes some non mandatory morning apps like 1Password. This app speaks for itself, who can keep up with all the password requirements today? You can’t even make passwords the same anymore. They all have to be different with an upper case letter, character, and numbers. A new trend is making password phrases. I will never remember this password so let me write it down, iwnrtpslmwid *ta-da*!  Yeah they make an app for that! Then onto my beloved HootSuite, I love having all my social media networks in one place. In the picture below you see the twitter icon which has been recently been replace with google+. I’m still getting into that, not quite there yet.  Then my Bible, yes Jesus makes my to do list. I’m sure he’s not offended by me giving my devotionals a reminder because that’s just the kind of relationship we have.

After some daily personal and motherly duties we visit screen two. Here my commonly used apps are Ego, KloutScore, Pinterest, Meetup, Get Glue and LinkedIn, all my social media must haves to capture an audience (it’s a work in progress). Then my reads folder has Instapaper, Tech Junkie and TimeMobile which I read everyday to tweet the stories I am most interested in and find worth sharing. In Photo I use PSExpress. This app is the best thing since penny candy, I can quickly update any photo and add it to twitter or Facebook. My favorite tool is soft focus. Health & Fitness has PillReminder. Who can always remember to take their vitamins? I never do. They say it takes 21 days to form a habit, well the exception to that rule is when taking your vitamins. In reference I use Rogert’s Thesaurus and the American Heritage Dictionary the most.

Now my business folder has some great applications some cost money but are well worth it. Billings which has a Mac version you can sync to is great for keeping up with client listings and creating invoices. RingCentral is an application for a monthly service that allows you to get a toll free or local number with a professional auto receptionist and internet fax ($9.99). I use the service for faxing. If you think about the trouble you have with always accessing a fax machine or if you have a separate fax line think about the cost involved, this makes great sense. Simply scan your document and e-mail it to the fax number using your RingCentral service. My iPhone is literally my virtual office.

Productivity has Listnomi which holds all my movie must sees and… my bucket list! Also the app Mooch! lists people that borrow stuff from me, so I can remember to get it back. Namely my niece who enjoys reading books from my extensive library. Key Ring has all of my store reward cards saved as bar codes, that actually work.  Coupons is self explanatory and Grocery G is like the grocery list app from heaven. It’s an organizers dream come true. I have all my grocery and household items stored in here so I just make my list by clicking a button. It also is a great way to stay on track and not impulse buy.

My last screen is not so important but still useful. One of my commonly used apps is GasCubby. I hate this app because it is a painful reminder that I drive a gas guzzler and that my carbon footprint is massive while my wallet dwindles every trip I make to the gas pump. Right next to that painful app is Go Green a folder that contains apps for reducing my carbon footprint. Call it counterbalance! In resource I have a great app called Tippy which allows you to calculate your servers tip and divide the bill if necessary when dining out. iTranslate, can’t go wrong with learning another language. iTourch4 is the best flashlight ever! My Foodie folder has my pride and joy Starbucks app. I should have stock in this company. If they had a platinum club I would be the Past President. It’s that serious. I also have BigOven and Epicurious which give me great dinner ideas. Last but not least my CODE folder which hold all my QuickGuide HTML cheat sheets. For the moments when I am simply perplexed and don’t want to completely mess up something on the back end of this site.

So it’s kind of Monk-ish in a tech sort of way. I organize my phone like my life. A little stiff but you can see the logic right?

My Mophie Never Lets Me Down

January 13, 2012 by Laing 1 Comment

I love my Mophie! In entering the world of social media and discovering the necessity to be on twitter 24/7 I realized that the battery life on my iPhone4 just wasn’t holding up. I tried everything from limiting open applications, turning off most notification settings, turning off wifi, not pushing e-mail accounts, dimming my screen *jumping up and down on one foot*. Anything you can think of I did it! Me and my plug were attached at the hip.

Then it dawned on me *dah* extended battery pack. So I did my research, who’s the best in the business for iPhone battery packs  @Mophie. I went to BestBuy due to the urgency of the matter and bought a regular black Mophie Juice Pack Plus but I truly should have held out and ordered one of the pretty colors. I have my eye on the Mophie Juice Pack Air (PRODUCT) RED. That could be my next monthly gift to myself while contributing to a good cause [SIDEBAR: every girl should buy herself something at least once a month big or small just to say yeah I'm special..]

I literally went from charging my iPhone4 daily to every two maybe pushing three days with twitter and facebook working overtime!  Oh and an honorable mention goes to multiple check-ins on foursquare. *clears throat* So in conclusion I find that my Mophie never lets me down! I have the ability to stay plugged into my virtual world for at least 24-48 hours without having to recharge. Yaaaay!

P.S. it comes in purple (not shown) the purple is hottt!
